Saltwater Fishing

Makin’ Memories… Kids & Saltwater Fishing

At 10 years of age, I was introduced to saltwater fishing. I didn’t do anything all that sophisticated, just caught blue crabs, catfish, small sharks and whiting from the pier, bridges and beaches of Jekyll Island. Compared with catching small bluegill, that first 3-foot shark was quite exhilarating. So were the blue crabs, which always…

Bend A Rod At Jekyll Island

The Georgia coast has changed quite a bit since my first visit almost 40 years ago, but Jekyll Island is still a laid-back, slow-paced escape from the modern world. Although the planned revitalization of the island has caused quite a bit of controversy, I think it’s safe to say that Jekyll will continue to be…

McIntosh County’s Inshore Saltwater Hotspots

Reading an article about saltwater fishing in Georgia generally means learning about catches either offshore, or around the Brunswick or Savannah areas. That’s not a bad thing, but there are a lot more places to fish along the coast than just those two or three locations. Five counties have a significant piece of the coast…

Light Tackle For Fall Redfish

“There’s a push. It’s a school of mullet, but maybe some reds are nearby,” Stu Apte of Islamorada, Fla. exclaimed as we quietly rounded a shallow, oyster-shell-laden point still within sight of the launch. I killed the trolling motor and my partners for the day flung flies to the shell-lined bank. My partner astern was…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – Nov. 1, 2024

By Capt. Bert Deener | November 1, 2024

Saltwater is still on fire, and several other freshwater fisheries produced some good catching this week, as well. Pretty much all the southeast Georgia rivers are fishable again. Altamaha River: A couple of Waycross anglers fished the river on Saturday and caught 21 bass up to 2.52 pounds. They had one straighten the hook that was in the 6-lb., range. They also had five bowfin up to 8 pounds. Okefenokee Swamp: The fishing effort has been almost zero again this week on the east side. The best reports were for catfish on the west side (at the Sill). Putting shrimp on the bottom produced the best catches. The fish are there and will bite, and the water level is good for getting around (but not too high). The most recent water level (Folkston side) was 121.15 feet. Dodge PFA (near Eastman): Milton Jones from the Eastman area had a good…
