Saltwater Fishing
The Georgia coast has changed quite a bit since my first visit almost 40 years ago, but Jekyll Island is still a laid-back, slow-paced escape from the modern world. Although the planned revitalization of the island has caused quite a bit of controversy, I think it’s safe to say that Jekyll will continue to be…
Reading an article about saltwater fishing in Georgia generally means learning about catches either offshore, or around the Brunswick or Savannah areas. That’s not a bad thing, but there are a lot more places to fish along the coast than just those two or three locations. Five counties have a significant piece of the coast…
“There’s a push. It’s a school of mullet, but maybe some reds are nearby,” Stu Apte of Islamorada, Fla. exclaimed as we quietly rounded a shallow, oyster-shell-laden point still within sight of the launch. I killed the trolling motor and my partners for the day flung flies to the shell-lined bank. My partner astern was…
“Tell me again why we’re doing this,” I asked Dan Foster as he checked his cast net for tangles. “If the shrimp are here, you’ll see on the first throw,” said Dan. It was a blustery day in late October 1988, and the location was Jointer Creek, one of many tidal waterways located between…
This has been a banner year for flounder along the Georgia coast. Catches have been big in both size and numbers, and the bite is still running strong. Charles McGill of Middleburg, Fla. and I made a trip to the coast looking for some flounder in August and found a number of locations where almost…
Get ready for some great fishing over the next month as the water warms and rivers drop out to perfect levels. Saltwater tides will be reasonable late this week, but they are increasing as we approach New Moon. Satilla River: The first angler award-sized redbreast was caught this weekend on the Satilla. It was 1.08 pounds. He caught it on a crankbait. Scott, Raigan and Amiee fished the upper Satilla on Sunday and caught a 5-gallon bucket of nice catfish by fishing shrimp on the bottom. Their biggest was 2 1/2 pounds. They also had some nice redbreasts on Satilla Spins. The water is still high, but lots of quality fish are going to be caught this week. The key on the Satilla is to fish it…

Crab-Stuffed Shrimp The dish that caused the judging to go into overtime at the 2024 AWF Wildgame Cookoff was a crab-stuffed shrimp dish prepared by the Hog Heaven team of Hartselle.
