Trip To Shark Alley

In September, shark fishing is at its peak in the inlets and sounds along the Georgia coast. This peak is just what some anglers await each year. We went after “Jaws” in August, hoping to find more of what had recently been a big-fish bite along the coast. Capt. David Newlin took us out of…

Beachfront Seatrout

I had meticulously calculated tides, checked sunrise times, and pored over my fishing log trying to choose a time that would maximize our chance of catching the seatrout bite just right to have a triple-digit day. The unknown variable was wind, but I had even rearranged my schedule to allow four days where the tide…

Ready For A Georgia Kingfish Tournament

Tournament—there’s something about that word that gets the blood moving in many anglers. The competition, the recognition, the camaraderie, and the possible winning purse all combine to make tournament fishing something special. Many bass anglers have fished in tournaments, from local club events all the way up to FLW and B.A.S.S. sanctioned affairs. But until the…

Catch Doormat Flounder Under The Docks

Flounder season is here, and the early run of fish in southeast Georgia has some flounder the size of doormats just waiting to be caught. The fish have migrated back inshore from their winter haunts to the sand around nearshore reefs and wrecks. Now is the time to cash in on some hard fighting and…

Red Snapper On The Savannah Banks

For most of us land-locked Georgians who spend our time fishing lakes and rivers, a 5-pounder is a BIG fish. Well, what if there were a place where 5-pounders, and up, are commonplace, and a fish under 20 inches is too little to keep? There is such a place, and though a pretty well-kept secret,…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – May 17, 2024

By Capt. Bert Deener | May 17, 2024

Fishing has been hit-and-miss with the rains scattered unevenly around the different basins. Some of the “hits” were very good catches! There is a fishing regulations virtual meeting coming up to discuss potential changes in the black bass regulations in Georgia. It will be held May 21 at 7 p.m., and you can find out more information at WRD Seeks Input On Proposed Bass Regulation Changes. The meeting will be live via Georgia Wildlife Resources Division’s Facebook page. Altamaha River: Jamie Hodge had a GREAT panfish trip on Wednesday in the backwaters. He had some big shellcracker and bluegill on catalpa worms. The lower river backwaters are where I would spend my time this weekend.    Ogeechee River: Mark Vick and a buddy fished the river Friday after the rains moved through and did well. They caught a bunch of fish and only kept 13 of the biggest redbreast. They…

Wild In The Kitchen: Blackened Redfish With Parmesan Cheese Sauce

The only thing that might be more fun than catching a redfish is eating one. This is the author’s favorite recipe for preparing his catch: Season redfish fillets with Redfish Magic seasoning (other blackening seasonings will work, also). Grill at 450 for one minute on each side, and then finish cooking filets on a sheet…
