Catch Your Own Seafood Platter

If you have a boat and some basic fishing knowledge, there is no need to pay big prices for a captain’s platter at a seafood restaurant. After a long growing season, the sea’s bounty is ripe for the picking during fall, with Georgia’s mile after square mile of productive marsh pumping out a smorgasbord. While…

Two Saltwater State Records Caught

So far this summer, the Georgia coast has produced two new state records for Georgia anglers, a women’s state record for tiger shark and a men’s state record for red grouper. Pam Page, of Savannah, was fishing near artificial reef JY, about 20 miles due east of St. Catherine’s Island, on June 3 when she…

Do-It-Yourself Beach Fishing On This Vacation

I have had many phone calls from “land-locked” friends headed to the Georgia beaches with their families on their week-long, once-a-year pilgrimage. It usually starts something like this, “Hi, Bert. By Capt. Bert Deener | December 20, 2024

Brentz McGhin and I fished together on Saturday, Dec. 14, in the lower river and caught a bunch of fish. We had about 2 dozen—mostly crappie. Our biggest crappie was 1 1/4 pounds. We caught half of them on a 1/16-oz Mirage Jig tipped with a minnow and half on a 1/32-oz. Tennessee Shad Specktacular Jig worked slowly.  Jamie Hodge fished the lower river on Sunday and caught a couple dozen really nice crappie up to 1-lb., 10-oz. He spider-rigged minnows for his fish. The river rose all week and is at the edge of the floodplain again. Satilla River: Blake Edwards fished with me on Thursday, Dec. 19, in the…
