Ocmulgee River
The Ocmulgee River flows from the Lake Jackson dam, creating a tailwater fishery that includes shoal bass. The flow meanders through the city of Macon and ultimately joins the Oconee River 241 miles downstream from Jackson, where the two rivers form the Altamaha River near Lumber City. The lower stretch of the Ocmulgee is known for big catfish and good bass fishing.

Any avid fisherman would know that catching a rainbow trout in warm water is not common. There just aren’t any trout in middle Georgia, right? This being the reason why Troy Harrell and his son Michael, of Roberta, were shocked to reel one in from the Ocmulgee River near Lake Jackson. Early Sunday morning on…
C.J. Rice caught the 5-lb., 12-oz. river-record spotted bass on the Ocmulgee River on March 9, 2014.
Duke Campbell Jr. set a benchmark for Ocmulgee River bluegill with 1-lb., 2.24-oz. that he caught on May 28, 2013.
“He’s right in the middle,” said Keith “Bird Dog” Walker, of Douglas, as his Bang-O-Lure landed softly between the crumbled pillars of an old bridge at the water’s edge. A short pull, just enough for the rear propeller to whir and spit, caused the water to boil up underneath it. Then a splash, and his…
It really is a simple fishing lure. It doesn’t require a high degree of skill to make a fish eat one, and right now — with a strong postspawn bite happening on most Georgia waters — it can be one of the most productive and versatile weapons in your arsenal. It will catch bass…
Ocmulgee River Fishing Reports
The bites have mostly been good this week. The Altamaha system bass bite has been great. Saltwater has provided a good bite when you could get out. Several days this week it was howling! At least two river records were set this week. Check out the write-ups in the Altamaha and Withlacoochee sections. Altamaha/Ocmulgee River:…
The fish are starting to move out of their summer patterns and move around more. It can be good and bad. It’s good because they feed better than in their mid-summer mode, but it’s sometimes hard to find them in the fall. Altamaha/Ocmulgee River:– My prediction in last week’s report about the Ocmulgee was correct.…
The bites have been good all over the place. With the forecasted rains this week, it’s going to be interesting figuring out what basins got the rain and are rising and which ones did not. Good luck! Morning trips are the ticket now with the heat and afternoon thunderstorms a possibility. Altamaha/Ocmulgee River: Jamie Hodge…
It’s going to be an awesome week as the various rivers drop into a range where the bite fires off. Choose the right spot and it will be lights out —miss it and you’ll make a bunch of fruitless casts. Good luck! Altamaha/Ocmulgee River: Brentz McGhin fished the lower river backwaters on Friday and caught…
It’s been a good week of fishing. This is one of my favorite times of the year—when the panfish start moving to the shallows to spawn, bass are feeding with reckless abandon until the summer heat sets in, saltwater fish are chewing, and the big silver kings are along our beaches. Good times on the…
