Ocmulgee River

The Ocmulgee River flows from the Lake Jackson dam, creating a tailwater fishery that includes shoal bass. The flow meanders through the city of Macon and ultimately joins the Oconee River 241 miles downstream from Jackson, where the two rivers form the Altamaha River near Lumber City. The lower stretch of the Ocmulgee is known for big catfish and good bass fishing.

Ocmulgee River Shoal Bass, Summertime From A Kayak

The phrase “Dog Days” doesn’t quite describe what’s going on in Georgia this month. I just took a quick glance out of my kitchen window at the thermometer that hangs on the corner of my back porch, and at roughly 2 in the afternoon, it’s clocking in right at 97 degrees—in the shade! Even a…

13-2 Ocmulgee River Gator On DIY Hunt

When my friend Garrett Harrison, of Hazlehurst, texted a photo of him and his wife LeeAnn standing beside a giant dead alligator, I was impressed. Garrett is not a small man, and just the gator’s tail was longer than Garrett was tall. I was curious as to whether he got it with a guide on…

Two Flounder Up The Ocmulgee, 150 Miles From The Coast

Miles Zachary was not surprised this time. He had already done it once, not even a year before, but now, on Sunday, April 30, 2023, he looked at his rare catch with amusement and awe. The Baxley native had just caught his second flounder around the confluence of the Oconee and Ocmulgee rivers where the…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – Nov. 17, 2023

The bite inland has been good but saltwater after the wind started blowing this weekend has been rough. Rivers are low, and fish are biting. Altamaha/Ocmulgee Rivers: Harry and James Beverley fished the lower Altamaha River this week for just a half-day trip before the rain ran them off. They caught 17 bass (12 keepers).…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – Oct. 5, 2023

The bite is picking up significantly in many places with the cooler weather. The Ocmulgee and Altamaha rivers are in good shape, so give them a try while they are right. The Okefenokee bite is good and saltwater has much-improved weather forecasted this weekend and much better tides.    Altamaha/Ocmulgee Rivers: Both of these rivers…

Ocmulgee River Fishing Report – July 2023

Ocmulgee River: According to Capt. Bert Deener, “A Fitzgerald angler who fishes the river each week no matter the level (unless it’s extremely flooded) had a great trip recently before it started rising significantly. His best trip was 17 bass, including a 3 1/2-lb. spot and a 5 1/2-lb. largemouth. That trip his biggest five…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – June 23, 2023

The rivers are back to full bank or in the floodplains for the most part. The exception is the St Marys River. It’s very fishable. Altamaha River: Paul and Steve Williamson fished the middle river on Friday and did well for panfish. They had a few catfish, but the shellcrackers were the prize. They put worms…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – June 9, 2023

Not as many people reported this week as compared to the holiday weekend, but there were still a lot of folks fishing. The rivers are getting back in decent shape again, and I expect to get some excellent reports this week. Alapaha River: Take note that the Highway 129 bridge boat ramp (near Lakeland) closed…
