Ocmulgee River

The Ocmulgee River flows from the Lake Jackson dam, creating a tailwater fishery that includes shoal bass. The flow meanders through the city of Macon and ultimately joins the Oconee River 241 miles downstream from Jackson, where the two rivers form the Altamaha River near Lumber City. The lower stretch of the Ocmulgee is known for big catfish and good bass fishing.

Willows line the bank, and blowdowns reach into the seams of chocolate-green, slow-moving current—some laydowns almost blocking the whole river.  No hindsight ip unit displayed. Bass fishing here is unique, target-rich and fun! The…

Fishing is great, and one reason is that you never really know what lurks down there and might take an interest in your lure. However, when you’re dragging a Carolina-rigged lizard in the Ocmulgee River and feel that tap-tap, an angler has to think largemouth bass. Not so fast… Wayne Nall, a longtime GON subscriber…

At least two river records were set this week. Check out the write-ups in the Altamaha and Withlacoochee sections. Altamaha/Ocmulgee River:…

The fish are starting to move out of their summer patterns and move around more. It can be good and bad. The bites have been good all over the place. With the forecasted rains this week, it’s going to be interesting figuring out what basins got the rain and are rising and which ones did not. Good luck! Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – June 14, 2024

It’s going to be an awesome week as the various rivers drop into a range where the bite fires off. Choose the right spot and it will be lights out —miss it and you’ll make a bunch of fruitless casts. Good luck! Altamaha/Ocmulgee River: Brentz McGhin fished the lower river backwaters on Friday and caught…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – June 7, 2024

It’s been a good week of fishing. This is one of my favorite times of the year—when the panfish start moving to the shallows to spawn, bass are feeding with reckless abandon until the summer heat sets in, saltwater fish are chewing, and the big silver kings are along our beaches. Good times on the…
