Ocmulgee River

The Ocmulgee River flows from the Lake Jackson dam, creating a tailwater fishery that includes shoal bass. The flow meanders through the city of Macon and ultimately joins the Oconee River 241 miles downstream from Jackson, where the two rivers form the Altamaha River near Lumber City. The lower stretch of the Ocmulgee is known for big catfish and good bass fishing.

103-lb. Flathead Catfish Pulled From Ocmulgee River

An Ocmulgee River flathead catfish weighing 103 pounds on certified scales was caught the morning of Aug. 19. The giant Appaloosa, taken above the Highway 96 bridge in Bonaire, would have swamped the current 83-lb. state record. However, the fish was caught on a trot line, meaning it’s not eligible for WRD’s state-record status. When…

On May 12, 2008, Travis Wilson, of Riverdale, was fishing for catfish in the Ocmulgee River just below the Lake Jackson dam when a big one hit. The fish weighed 33-lbs., 8-ozs. and establishes a channel catfish record for the river. The fish hit a chicken liver.

Ocmulgee River ‘Buster’ Bream

May is bream month. For any Yankees that may read these words, bream is Southernese for bluegill.  I’ve given serious thought to corresponding this recommendation to George W. for his official proclamation. But I really think it is already such a consensus among us anglers that no official declaration is really necessary. May is the…

Ocmulgee River Record Flathead Catfish

A relaxing fishing vacation to the Ocmulgee River with four good buddies during the summer of 2002 turned into a record-breaking enterprise for 72-year-old Hiram Baughcum, of Griffin. On July 2, 2002, Hiram successfully hooked and boated the new Ocmulgee River record catfish. The oversized cat weighed 59-lbs., 2-ozs. and measured 46 1/4 inches long.…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – Sept. 6, 2024

The bites have mostly been good this week. The Altamaha system bass bite has been great. Saltwater has provided a good bite when you could get out. Several days this week it was howling! At least two river records were set this week. Check out the write-ups in the Altamaha and Withlacoochee sections. Altamaha/Ocmulgee River:…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – Aug. 30 2024

The fish are starting to move out of their summer patterns and move around more. It can be good and bad. It’s good because they feed better than in their mid-summer mode, but it’s sometimes hard to find them in the fall. Altamaha/Ocmulgee River:– My prediction in last week’s report about the Ocmulgee was correct.…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – June 28, 2024

The bites have been good all over the place. With the forecasted rains this week, it’s going to be interesting figuring out what basins got the rain and are rising and which ones did not. Good luck! Morning trips are the ticket now with the heat and afternoon thunderstorms a possibility. Altamaha/Ocmulgee River: Jamie Hodge…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – June 14, 2024

It’s going to be an awesome week as the various rivers drop into a range where the bite fires off. Choose the right spot and it will be lights out —miss it and you’ll make a bunch of fruitless casts. Good luck! Altamaha/Ocmulgee River: Brentz McGhin fished the lower river backwaters on Friday and caught…

Southeast Georgia Fishing Reports With Capt. Bert Deener – June 7, 2024

It’s been a good week of fishing. This is one of my favorite times of the year—when the panfish start moving to the shallows to spawn, bass are feeding with reckless abandon until the summer heat sets in, saltwater fish are chewing, and the big silver kings are along our beaches. Good times on the…
