Lake Russell Fishing Report January 2015

GON Staff | December 23, 2014

Russell: Level: 1 to 2 feet below full pool, depending on generation. Temp: 50 degrees.

Bass: Kerry Partain reports, “The bass fishing is the best it’s been all year, and I expect it to stay that way through January. The baitfish are stacked up, and the bass are feeding strong. The weather conditions have a big impact on which baits I am using on any given day. On overcast days, the bait is moving more, and you can catch them on a Fish Head Spin and a jig. The spots are still biting the drop shot and shaky head along the ditches in the pockets and on main-lake points and humps. When you are searching for bait, keep your eyes out for birds. Once you locate them, use your electronics to mark the fish. The majority of the fish are in 25 to 35 feet of water, so look for areas in that depth range to narrow your search. As we go into January, the fish and bait should bunch up more. As the water cools into the 40s, I will rely on the jigging spoon more.”
