Lake Russell To Host 32nd Annual Kids Fishing Derby

GON Staff | April 16, 2022

Kids can take part in a special day of fishing at Lake Russell, win prizes, and participate in other fun activities including archery, but space is limited, and registration is required.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Richard B. Russell Project Office, is hosting the 32nd Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Blue Hole Recreation Area, located on HIghway 81 in Calhoun Falls, SC.

Youth ages 5-15 may participate, if registered. Check-in is from  7 a.m. to  8 a.m., and fishing hours are from 8 to 11 a.m. A water safety program will follow along with prizes and a free lunch. Lunch is provided to all registered participants by the Lake Russell Recreation and Tourism Coalition and consists of a sandwich, chips, drink and dessert. Attendees 16 or older may purchase a lunch for $5 per person (subject to availability).

The 32nd Annual Kids Fishing Rodeo on April 30 carries on a long tradition. Back in 2012 during the 24th annual event, Reuben Overholt helped his son, Benjamin, reel in a catfish.

Along with fishing for stocked catfish, there will be yard games, a playground and an archery area will be available and free. Several prizes will be awarded, including a grand prize drawing for a loaded tackle box.

Space is limited to the first 100 anglers, so registration is required to reserve your spot and lunch. To register, please call the Russell Lake Project Office at 706.213.3400 or 800.944.7207.

Parents and guardians can fish outside the net during the fishing derby with a Georgia or South Carolina fishing license. Youth 15 and younger do not need a fishing license. Restrooms and drinking water will be available for everyone, but attendees should plan to bring their own chair, fishing gear and sunscreen. Life jackets are highly recommended for children and weak swimmers who will be near the water.

For additional information, or to learn how to donate, please call Park Ranger Annette Dotson toll free at 800.944.7207 or 706.213.3406.
