Lake Russell Fishing Report January 2014

GON Staff | December 30, 2013

Russell: Level: Full pool. Temp: Low 50s. Clarity: The main lake is clear; stained in the upper part of creeks.

Bass: Tournament angler Kerry Partain reports, “The bass fishing has really turned on the past few weeks, and the major creeks are loaded with bait. We have been catching a couple bigger bass early on a crankbait in the creeks. Then as the sun gets up, you can catch a ton of 1- to 2-lb. spotted bass using a drop shot with a Zoom Finesse or Z-Drop worm on primary and secondary points in 20 to 30 feet of water. We have also been catching a few better largemouth on a Carolina rig around brush in the major creeks. There are a lot of birds in the creek feeding on all the bait, so keep a look out for them, and the bass will be close by. When you find the birds, keep an eye on your electronics. And once you locate the fish, drop a spoon through them, and hold on. The spoon bite should just get better going into January as the bait and bass begin to stack up in the ditches.”
