Lake Russell Fishing Report December 2013

GON Staff | November 26, 2013

Russell: Level: 8.1 feet low. Temp: Mid 50s. Clarity: Clear.

Bass: Fish the deep coves with trees in water deeper that 30 feet. A swimbait worked through the trees slowly will produce some fish, but I prefer to use a drop shot. Texas rig the worm so it will not be impaled on the tree limbs, and use your electronics to find the fish. Personally, I prefer the Lowrance HDS 12 for a clear show picture. Use the side scan to locate fish along the edges of the trees. Another good pattern is to work a jig or shaky head slowly along deep creek bends. Keep a lipless bait and your favorite jerkbait handy as well. They will come in handy if the water warms a bit on sunny days. Finally, don’t forget the rip-rap near deep water. The rocks will warm quickly and deserve a look in the afternoon. A square-bill crankbait will serve you well in those situations.
