Roswell Outdoor Academy Camp is looking for volunteers and camp counselors for their week-long day camp June 22-26. A fly-fishing expert and an archery instructor are needed to do 1 1/2-hour clinics Monday, June 22 or Tuesday, June 23. The camp is designed to promote outdoor activities, such as hunting and fishing; as well as archery, gun safety, fly fishing, game calling, decoying, air rifles, species identification, outdoor cooking and much more.
"I think the point of the camp is that kids get to be exposed to so many great activities in our community these days, from karate to drama and almost every sport imaginable. We felt that hunting and fishing should be on that list as well. By introducing a child to these wholesome and beneficial hobbies through the Roswell Outdoor Academy, we may help create a passion that will last a lifetime", said Camp Director David Smith.
The day camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Garrard’s Landing on Holcomb Bridge Road. They are also in need of camp counselors. This is a paid position for high schoolers or college students who can help serve as coordinators from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day the entire week. The pay is $250 cash for 25 hours. Outdoor knowledge is a plus but not required.
"And from the kids perspective, think about the fun," David says, "They will learn to shoot real bows and air rifles, learn how to call turkeys and ducks, learn to fly fish, see a live hunting dog demonstration, learn about—and handle—all kinds of freshwater fish, and even get to cook their very own wild game lunch! Where else can a kid do all of that in one week? Only at the Roswell Outdoor Academy!"
There are still open spots for kids to attend, ranging in ages from 8-16. They must pay for the entire week, not day-by-day. There are different fees for Roswell residents versus those who aren’t residents. Visit www.roswellgov.com or www.outdoorkids.org for more information and registration.
