Kids Can Apply For Bobwhite Quail Initiative Quota Hunts
GON Staff | September 1, 2006
WRD’s Bobwhite Quail Initiative (BQI) is offering a unique opportunity to hunt some private farm land with awesome quail habitat. Youth and adults alike will get the chance to see how wild quail react when flushed. It’s bound to be great fun for all parties involved.
The BQI is a program promoting the increase and enhancement of the quality of nesting, brood rearing, and escape cover for bobwhites and other grassland wildlife on agricultural lands. They do so by establishing and managing native warm-season grasses, forbs (sometimes called weeds) and shrubs around working farms.
Reggie Thackson, WRD private lands program manager, said, “The main objective to these hunts is for kids who have never hunted quail before to get out and see some real wild quail. They’ll get a chance to see the dogs work and see how wild quail act as opposed to pen-raised quail. We just want to get out there and have a good time. If they kill some quail, that’s great.”
Hunters should apply by letter to: Attn: Quota Quail Hunt, 116 Rum Creek Drive, Forsyth, GA 31029. Applications must include: hunt choices in priority order, full names, SSNs, addresses, dates of birth (for all hunters 10-17 years of age) and names and phone numbers of supervising adults.
If you have a rejection letter from a previous year please include this with the application. An adult supervisor must accompany each youth hunter. Party applications of two youth/adult pairs per hunt will be accepted. Hunters are encouraged to provide their own bird dogs but in the event that this is not possible, dogs may be provided.
Selected hunters will receive a permit by mail and will be contacted by WRD personnel to arrange a time and place to meet on the day of the hunt. Permits are non-transferable. Hunters not selected will be notified by mail.
