Saltwater Fishing

Mayday!

MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY! Absolutely the last thing any captain wants to ever hear, or say, across a VHF radio. The decisions he or she has made up until that very instant, going back months, weeks, days, minutes, even seconds, could very well mean the difference between life or death for their crew and themselves. In…

Steinhatchee Now

It felt and looked more like a scene from a Saskatchewan trout fishing excursion. A mist was hitting me in the face as I gazed through a fog that hung just above the water. With the wind at my back, I made a long cast with a gold-colored Johnson spoon. With numb left fingers, I…

Saltwater Kayak Fishing For Redfish And Trout

December is as good a month as you could ask for. The celebration of Christ’s birth, old Santa sneaking down the chimney and plenty of time with family and friends. It’s Christmas time in Georgia, and I plan to enjoy every minute of it, both off and on the water. That’s right, I’m not ready…

By GON Staff | May 2, 2024

Saltwater: Inshore: Capt. David Newlin reports, “April has been a good month for trout and redfish. A lot of big trout and plenty of redfish have been caught all month. Redfish should be all over the place. They will be all over the sounds and up in the creeks. Fish around oyster shells in 2 to 3 feet of water with a shrimp under a cork. Big roe trout should be schooled up in the sounds. By May, they should be moving near the beaches getting ready to spawn. Float a shrimp under a cork around points that have current around them. They can be shallow and in 20 feet of water. When you catch one, there should…

Wild In The Kitchen: Blackened Redfish With Parmesan Cheese Sauce

The only thing that might be more fun than catching a redfish is eating one. This is the author’s favorite recipe for preparing his catch: Season redfish fillets with Redfish Magic seasoning (other blackening seasonings will work, also). Grill at 450 for one minute on each side, and then finish cooking filets on a sheet…
