Lake Russell Fishing Report – September 2019

GON Staff | August 28, 2019

Russell: Level: 0.7 feet low. Temp: Mid 80s. Clarity: Stained in the creeks and clear on the main lake.

Bass: Tournament angler Kerry Partain reports, “Bass fishing has been slower on Russell, but there are still some big largemouth being caught each week. We have been catching a good many smaller spotted bass in 15 to 25 feet of water on a Texas rig and a shaky head, especially when they are generating. For the bigger spots and largemouth, we have been fishing slow around timber and brush around deep water. The big fish bites have been slow and very subtle, so it has been critical to have a very sensitive rod, and I like the Dobyn’s Champion Extreme in a 7-6 medium heavy. As we head into September, the fishing should improve with the cooler weather and lower water temperatures. Once the water cools below 80, the baitfish will begin to get active, and a buzzbait, crankbait or a jig will be good baits to target the more active bass feeding on them.”
