Lake Eufaula
Lake Eufaula, also known as Walter F. George Lake, named for the United States Senator from Georgia, is formed on the Chattahoochee River along the state line between Alabama and Georgia. Eufaula has long been a great fishing lake, especially for largemouth bass. The town of Eufaula, Ala. is home to Mann's Bait Company and Humminbird Electronics. The 46,000-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake extends north about 85 miles from the Walter F. George Lock and Dam and has approximately 640 miles of shoreline.

Eufaula: Level: 1.5 feet above 188. Temp: 58 degrees. Clarity: Heavy stain. Bass: Capt. Sam Williams, with Hawks Fishing Guide Service, reports, “The lake is holding steady, even after an additional 8-plus inches last week. The temperature swings are giving our fish a fit. We have experienced nights in the mid 20s and afternoons in the 70s. The afternoon shallow bite is working with creature baits and Texas-rigged finesse worms worked very slow. The rip-rap along the causeways and railroad trestles are holding daytime heat and fish. Deeper fish, staged on structure, are also needing to be aggravated into a strike. Jigs, tipped with creature baits, worked vertically among them will work or a big soft plastic on a Carolina rig will cause some action. Darker worms with a colored tail is a good bet. Dip all your plastics in J.J’s Magic in this dirty water. It does make a…

Tom Shapard says fishing is a lot of fun because you never know when you begin a fishing trip how the day is going to turn out or what you’ll catch. That’s the kind of day we had on beautiful Lake Eufaula (or Walter F. George) on November 8. The weather was absolutely glorious with…
May is a month of transition on Lake Eufaula for both bass and bass fishermen. The water temperature is warming, and the spawning cycle is pretty much over. The bass that were easy pickings during previous weeks seem to either disappear or get a serious case of lock jaw. Fishing can be downright tough if…
William Thomas “Tom” Mann, 72, a legendary tournament fisherman, lure-maker, and television personality, passed away in Birmingham on Friday, February 11, 2005 from complications from his second heart surgery. Tom Mann started Mann’s bait company in 1958 with $5, and later he became one of the most popular personalities in the fishing industry. He won…
When I met fishing-guide Jesse Bowman at the Lakepoint boat ramp, I asked him if we would be trolling, pitching, spooning, or shooting docks for crappie, and I liked his answer. “We’ll do whatever it takes to catch them,” he said. But weather wise, we faced a tough day. We were fishing the day after…
As the big bass boat glided silently through the dead stems of the lily pads that poked sporadically through the surface of the water, we could see the thick beds of hydrilla covering the bottom of the shallow lagoon. The water was only a couple of feet deep, and once in a while we’d see…
