Lake Russell Fishing Report – January 2021
GON Staff | December 27, 2020
Russell: Level: Full pool. Temp: Mid 50s. Clarity: Clear.
Bass: Tournament angler Kerry Partain reports, “The water finally cooled off, and the fishing is heating up. The baitfish are starting to bunch up better, and the bass are feeding up heavy right now. We have been catching a lot of spotted bass, and every now and then you will run across a big largemouth. I use my Lowrance electronics to find big schools of shad with fish around them, and right now most of the activity is in 30 to 50 feet of water. The loons and gulls have finally showed up, so they are always a good indicator of baitfish in the area. Once you locate the fish, you can catch them on a drop shot with a Zoom Finesse worm or a Tiny Fluke and a jigging spoon. As we move into January, it looks like more cooler weather is on the way, and this will bunch the bait up even more, and the bigger bass will start showing up more regular. The same baits I mentioned before will work, but I will also start throwing a Blade Runner or a Fish Head Spin with a Zoom Fluke and an Alabama rig in the ditches on the main lake.”
