Leatherman Puts New Spin On Hunting Knives
Juli Warner | April 3, 2007
Leatherman Tool Group has introduced four robust and innovative hunting knives. These new fixed and folding models offer bone saws (fixed models), gut hooks and premium stainless steel blades.
“One thing we wanted to address with these knives was safety,” said Senior Product Engineer Hollan Tsuda. “They need to have the size and strength required to perform out in the field, but also be safe and easy to work with.” The fixed models—Steens™ and Ukiah™—incorporate rotating handles that cover the blade for safety, while simultaneously exposing a full-size gut hook that’s easy to hold, use and sharpen.
Also included in the body of the fixed knives, is an aggressive bone saw that locks into place over the 3.75” drop-point blade. The Steens features a rosewood-inlay handle with an S30V® stainless steel blade and gut hook (MSRP $130.00). Ukiah’s tough yet lightweight grip, is molded around a 154CM stainless steel blade and gut hook (MSRP $110.00).
“We’re definitely flushing out a full line of products for hunters,” says Market Segment Manager, Kent Thomas. “With the Surge™ multi-tool, Vista™ hunting pruners and now these hunting knives, we’re coming up with some great product solutions.”
The Klamath™ and Nehalem™ models also feature generous gut hooks that remain hidden until needed, sliding out easily from the handle. They each have a four-inch blade with Leatherman’s strong lockback locking mechanism. Klamath has a rosewood-inlay handle and S30V® stainless steel blade (MSRP $110.00), while Nehalem features a strong, non-slip grip around a 154CM stainless steel blade (MSRP $90.00).
All models include a diamond-coated sharpening rod with fine-point work capabilities. The Steens, Ukiah and Klamath models all come with a premium leather sheath featuring button closure for quiet operation in the field. The Nehalem model comes with a rugged nylon sheath in Realtree’s Hardwoods Green® camo pattern. All the sheaths have a sturdy belt loop for placement onto a pack, gear bag, or belt.
