Lake Jackson Fishing Report March 2017

GON Staff | March 1, 2017

Jackson: Level: 1.3 feet below full pool. Temp: High 50s to low 60s. Clarity: Clear to slightly stained.

Bass: Tournament angler Keith Dawkins reports, “March is usually a transition month on Jackson, with the bass beginning to move from their deep-water winter haunts toward their staging areas for the spawn, which generally occurs in April. That said, Jackson should be way ahead of schedule this year with the warmer than usual winter we have experienced. I fished last week, and the surface temperature in some spots was 65 degrees in the afternoon. That is highly unusual to say the least. I would start with long points and drops near spawning pockets, as well as on docks in the same areas the first of the month. Small, tight-wobble crankbaits like No. 5 Shad Raps in shad/black-back or crayfish colors, as well as Bandit 300s, are good baits to start your search with. The Jackson bass in March can move drastically from one day to the next depending on spring cold fronts and rain. You can also use jerkbaits like Luck Craft Pointers, or if you would rather, Zoom Super Flukes fished around the docks and rocks in these transitional areas. As the water warms into the upper 60s, the bass will move from their staging areas back into the pockets and onto spawning flats. Once this happens, you can throw a wide variety of baits, but some of my favorites during the spawn are Bang-O-Lures, double willowleaf spinnerbaits, or 6-inch Zoom lizards in green pumpkin or watermelon/ chartreuse tail. If a bad cold snap hits us in March, don’t be afraid to hop a 3/8-oz. football-head jig on rocky points—this can be a great way to find a big one in the spring on Jackson.”
