Lake Jackson Fishing Report April 2018

GON Staff | March 28, 2018

Jackson: Level: 1 foot low. Temp: Low 60s. Clarity: Clear to stained.

Bass: Guide Keith Dawkins reports, “April should be a great month on Jackson as you can find bass in all stages of the spawning cycle. For spots, concentrate on long points and flats in the main-lake areas to begin the month. It is hard to beat Shad Raps and Bandit 200s when searching for fish in these areas. Always keep a fluke rigged this month. When fishing the points and flats or docks adjacent to these areas, let the fluke sink on a slack line for a few seconds before beginning your retrieve. Often times you will get hit on the initial fall, so keep a close eye on your line for movement. Straight-tail worms on jig heads fished in these same areas are great when the spots are not in the mood to chase crankbaits or flukes. As the water warms, topwater baits, like Pop-Rs and Whopper Ploppers, can draw explosive strikes near seawalls and brush on shallow flats. For largemouth, concentrate on wood cover in spawning pockets and near dock posts. Flip 6-inch lizards and 1/2-oz. jigs tight to cover. Throw ChatterBaits and double willowleaf spinnerbaits parallel to docks and blowdowns for aggressive prespawn females. I have caught a number of big fish year after year on Bang-O-Lures. The key is to throw the bait right up as close as you can to the shoreline in spawning pockets and slowly twitch and pause. In fact, I have caught some of my biggest bass on Jackson after pausing it for five to 10 seconds.”
