Lake Chatuge Fishing Report – August 2024

GON Staff | August 1, 2024

Chatuge: Level: 0.5 feet below 1925. Temp: 84-86 degrees. Clarity: Clear.

Bass: Guide Eric Welch, of Welch’s Guide Service, “Fishing has been good, but it’s been hot. We’re catching fish in depths of 18 to 45 feet. This time of year a variety of baits will catch fish. You may just have to do a lot of switching around to find what works best that day because it can change daily. I like to start my mornings throwing some topwater lures, like a Berkley Cane Walker or a Lucky Craft Gunfish. You will also want to keep one of these on the front deck all day long in case fish start breaking. After a couple of hours of throwing topwater, I will start to target deep banks, long points with a drop and offshore structure. I’m going to be throwing a drop-shot rig with a 6-inch, hand-poured worm or a Roboworm. I will also throw a Texas rig and a shaky head with a green-pumpkin worm. Forward-facing sonar can play a big part of your fish catching. It’s going to be the best way to find fish. It’s going to help you not spend time in areas where there is no fish, but the biggest advantage is it’s going to help you see how the fish are reacting to the bait that you’re throwing. While using your forward-facing sonar, I like throwing a 3.5-inch minnow-style bait on a 1/4-oz. jig head. You can also target docks and laydowns with a Zoom Fluke. We are fixing to enter the hottest time of year for fishing. Let’s remember fish care. Good luck.”
