Lake Blackshear Fishing Report – March 2025
GON Staff | February 26, 2025
Blackshear: Level: 0.4 feet below 237. Temp: Mid to upper 50s. Clarity: Muddy in the river channel, stained off the main lake.
Bass: Tournament angler Chris Gray reports that after a brutally cold January, February brought some much needed warmer weather. The bass have already started moving up, and the bite has been really good the last couple of weeks. I’ve been catching a lot of smaller buck bass in shallow water using a Texas-rigged Googan Trench Hawg in the green-pumpkin color. It really depends on the day whether they’re relating to wood or grass cover. I expect the bite in March to get better and better as the month goes on. By the third week of March, the big females should also be up shallow trying to spawn, starting in Swift Creek. On the north end of the lake, the spawn could last as long as mid April in some places. My baits of choice for March would be some type of dark-colored, Texas-rigged creature bait or lizard, a white popping-style frog, a spinnerbait with gold blades and a small, shad-colored squarebill crankbait. March is one of the best months to bass fish at Lake Blackshear.”

Crappie: Cory Singletary, with C&S Guide Service, reports that the crappie are on the move. Currently they’re staging up on flats and creek ledges in 10 to 15 feet of water. As the water continues to warm, they’ll be moving more shallow to the backs of the same creeks. Target wood cover, such as logs, blowdowns and stumps as the crappie will be spawning on the hardwood cover. An ATX Baby Shad jig paired with a 1/32-oz. Litewire Hook and 6-lb. line will be the setup to catch them. You can find the jigs and tackle at Flint River Outdoors located on Highway 280.”
