Lake Blackshear Fishing Report – February 2025

GON Staff | January 29, 2025

Blackshear: Level: Full at 237. Temp: 42 degrees. Clarity: Stained.

Bass: Tournament angler Chris Gray reports, “After receiving about 8 inches of snow on Jan. 21, the water temperature has dipped as low as I’ve ever seen it at Blackshear, nearing the 40-degree mark in some places. I don’t expect it to stay that way long, though. Longer days and warmer nights will quickly heat the water back up into the 50s as we get into February. Like most places, February can be a great month to catch your personal best Blackshear bass. The key to success this month will be targeting any structure that will hold heat, especially rocks and wood in the form of blowdowns. My favorite lures to use this month are a Rapala DT6 crankbait in red or chartreuse, a spinnerbait with gold blades and a black/blue jig. Rip-rap banks in deeper water will be great places to throw the crankbait, especially in the afternoon after the sun gets up. Once you get to a blowdown, toss your spinnerbait or jig right into the middle of the tree multiple times before moving on. The bass will be a little finicky until the water gets back up near 55 to 58 degrees. As we get closer to March, big female bass will be feeding up in preparation for the spawn. If you’re looking for a big bite, try throwing a Zoom Magnum Lizard in these same areas. Good luck.”
