Georgia Saltwater Fishing Report – September 2007

GON Staff | September 1, 2007

Saltwater: Inshore: Capt. Jack McGowan of Miss Judy Charters said the fishing has been good despite hot, humid days and pop-up thunderstorms that have muddied the water. Lots of small summer trout about 12 inches in length are showing on the sandbars. Capt. Judy Helmey also reports good action the past weekend (August 25) near the beachfronts with sea trout, redfish, whiting and flounder being caught. “Fish early to try and beat the heat,” Capt. Judy said. “Bonnethead sharks are plentiful, particularly where crabs, shrimp and muddy bottoms are present. The sharks are also on the sandbars. Another sign of summer is ladyfish. When sea trout aren’t biting, it’s likely ladyfish or bluefish will show up. Ladyfish will take a variety of baits as well as the artificial stuff or a fly. For the best action it’s best to target areas with current and close to the sounds.”

Offshore: Capt. Judy said the bite for kings has remained deep. “Our offshore boats have been catching kings in 100 to 110 feet of water. They have been in a deep holding pattern for most of the year,” she said. “The artificial reefs have been holding some interest; however, most of our kings have been caught while fishing live-bottom areas at the Savannah Snapper Banks. The naval towers have been great areas to fish, but getting too close will get you barracuda bites. The kings are normally found hanging in the perimeter of these areas. I have been using old-school methods for catching king mackerel. I have been pulling 3 1/2-inch Drone spoons 30 feet behind No. 3 Sea Striker planers. My best trolling speed is 6 to 7 knots.” Capt. Judy said to pay attention, and if you notice the fish spitting up small bait, match the hatch and down size your baits. Switch to a 1 1/2-inch Drone spoon. “Most of the smoker kings have been caught while fishing on the bottom with our snapper/grouper rig and live bait,” she said.
