Georgia Saltwater Fishing Report – December 2007

GON Staff | November 27, 2007

Saltwater: Inshore: Very good. “The inshore fishing has been some of the best I’ve seen in years for specks,” said Capt. Greg Hildreth. “It seems like every place you fish is holding good numbers of trout! I’ve been catching them on float rigs using live shrimp as well as DOA shrimp and Spike-It grubs. The redfishing has been very good as well for above-legal-size fish on the mud flats. I’ve been targeting these fish mostly with the fly rod using deceivers. The trout bite should be very good for another month or so, and the reds should get better as the water gets colder.”

Offshore: Very good when the weather will let you get out there, according to Capt. Judy Helmey. “Our offshore pattern has been strong; however; the wind has been blocking us out of areas that we normally fish this time of the year. The good news is that one day last week I was able to make that extra 5-mile run to the middle of the Savannah Snapper Banks, and it turned out to be just like I thought, red hot. The bottom line to the fishing report is that if you can get out there, there is some great bottom action to be had. We caught red snapper, grouper, vermilion, triggerfish, black sea bass, porgy, and many more bottom feeders. Some preferred the chase and taste of live bait while others just ate what dropped in front of them. The water temperature in this area is about 68 degrees, which makes it a serious target rich environment!”
