Giant Gator In The Deer Woods

The alligator lumbered off after laying down on the hunter's corn pile... and headed toward his truck!

An exciting aspect of deer hunting is you never know what you might see during an outing in the woods. A bowhunter in Macon County got more excitement than he was expecting—or wanting—when he witnessed what looked more like a scene from Jurrasic Park than something you’d see during a deer hunt.

During the third week of November, Mike Dupree was bowhunting on a corporate tract of land where firearms are not allowed. His climbing stand was located in planted pines an estimated 1,500 yards—almost a mile—from the Flint River and a retention pond where alligators, including one estimated at 13 feet long, are seen regularly.

At work the next day, Mike had quite the story and a video to show his buddies.

“He said, ‘You’ll never guess what walked in on me,'” said Mike’s coworker, Jack Benjamin. “We started guessing, and it to got to where we were saying elephant, giraffe… no one guessed alligator,” Jack said.

“We asked if it was still there at dark, and Mike said, ‘No, it went toward my truck.'”

And his truck was farther away from the river or pond, likely making for a hair-raising and careful walk out of the woods for Mike.
