Carl Logan Passes After Brief Cancer Fight

Carl Logan Jr. was a fixture in Georgia bass fishing, owner of an outdoor sales rep company, and a founding investor for GON.

Carl Logan Jr. was primary among a handful of men who, if it were not for them, there likely wouldn’t be a GON today.

Carl was a fellow member at Marietta Bassmasters, a close friend, and an original investor who helped Steve Burch when Steve first started GON in the late 1980s. Just as Volume 34, Issue 1 of GON goes to press, we are sad to learn that Carl passed away at age 75. He was very recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Carl was born on April 23, 1944 in Moundville, Alabama. He graduated from Campbell High School in Cobb County, where he ran track and played football. He graduated from Georgia State College in 1968 with a major in political science. Carl’s professional life led to the hunting and fishing industry, where he owned Simpson Sales, a firm that represented numerous hunting and fishing companies. Carl was also an excellent writer, having written articles for Georgia Sportsmen and then for GON. His last article was published in 2014, “80 Years Chasing Rabbits.”

Most weekends found Carl on a reservoir, either fishing for fun or competing in bass club events or couples tournaments with his wife of 57 years, Betty Logan. He also loved to hunt, and his annual dove shoots on his property near Winder provided lifelong memories for many. Carl was a very active member of Winder First United Methodist Church, including chairing the Church Council.

Carl was a great man and will be greatly missed.

A funeral service to honor the life of Carl Logan will be held today, Thursday, Dec. 19, 2019 at 2 p.m. at the Winder First United Methodist Church. The family will be receiving friends today from noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. The members of Carl’s Sunday men’s prayer group will serve as pallbearers. An additional funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 20, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Carmichael Funeral Home, 2950 King St SE, in Smyrna. Burial will follow the service at Georgia Memorial Park in Marietta. The members of the E-3 Bass Club will serve as pallbearers. The family has respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Carl Logan to the Winder First United Methodist Church General Budget or to the American Cancer Society.
