Lake Seed

Seed Lake is a small 240-acre mountain reservoir with 13 miles of shoreline located in Rabun County in the northeast corner of Georgia. It is the second lake in a series of six lakes on the Tallulah River. The series begins with Lake Burton as the northernmost lake, followed by lakes Seed, Rabun, Tallulah Falls, Tugalo and Yonah. These are Georgia Power Co. lakes, built to generate hydroelectric energy. Seed and these other northeast Georgia mountain lakes offers some fishing opportunities unique to Georgia, where anglers can catch trophy walleye and yellow perch along with traditional species such as bass, crappie and bream.

Lake Burton Full Moon Bull Bream

Each year, beneath the light of summer’s first full moon, huge honeycombs of saucer-shaped depressions appear in Lake Burton’s sandy shallows. These are the storied bluegill breeding grounds, and each bed is fiercely guarded by huge purple-browed papa bream that will attack anything that gets near their nests. Burton’s bream spawn lasts from May through…

Lake Seed Record Largemouth

Friday the 13th wasn’t an unlucky day for Johnny Appling, of Buford. On Friday, March 13 in 2009, Johnny caught a 14-lb., 4-oz. lake-record largemouth on Lake Seed. He might attribute it more to persistence than luck, but Johnny caught the Lake Seed record while fishing a Sworming Hornet Fish Head Spin with a white…

Two Burton Lake-Record Smallmouth

Six months after the first smallmouth bass ever documented in Lake Burton was caught, that lake record has been broken twice by some impressive bronzebacks. On July 7, 2008, David Roane, of Atlanta, was fishing at Burton with a blue-and-chrome colored Krocodile spoon. At about 11 a.m. a hefty fish hit — an unusual fish.…

Lake Burton Magnum May Spots

Each May the shad and blue- back herring will spawn by the gazillions, and when they do, bass and other predatory fish gorge themselves on the baitfish. On north Georgia reservoirs that have blueback herring, anglers experience some of the fastest, most fun fishing of the year. If a lake is full of big spots,…
