Lake Jackson
Lake Jackson is one of the oldest reservoirs in the United States. Jackson has transitioned from a trophy largemouth bass lake to lots more spotted bass making up the bass catch. Crappie fishing is good on Jackson, and the lake is home to some huge catfish. The Lloyd Shoals Dam was built in 1910 by Central Georgia Power Company, and electricity was originally generated for the city of Macon. At 4,750 acres, Lake Jackson is small compared to other Georgia reservoirs.

Jackson: Level: 528. Temp: Low 60s. Clarity: Clear. Bass: Tournament angler Willie McMullen won a tournament at the end of October with 19.90 pounds and had big fish with a 5.90-lb. largemouth. Use extreme caution running the lake until it comes back up some. A lot of smaller bass are being caught on moving baits—bladed jigs to crankbaits. Shad and natural craw patterns are both good. Target wood and rock with them. For bigger fish, try green-pumpkin jigs on the ends of trees and deeper docks. Topwater is still a good option early and on shady banks after the sun gets up. A Whopper Plopper, Pop-R and a walking bait will work, but it changes daily. He says it’s finally a great time to catch fish again on Jackson. Jody Williams, a 34-year-old Pike County man, and his dad, Ed Darden, were fishing out of a Bomber boat with a 150 h.p. Yamaha outboard on Lake Jackson on March 19, 2004. Jody’s brother was down the lake in a jonboat. The two had been talking by cell phone, giving each other accounts of a…
You have spent time outdoors and you know that the best-laid plans can sometimes go to waste. Mother Nature unleashes a downpour, or Old Man Winter puts fishing on the deep freeze. And sometimes, the outboard gremlin can put a kink in your ability to get to your favorite fishing hole. Such was the case…
For good bass fishing, especially for quality-sized bass, one of Georgia’s smaller reservoirs, little Lake Jackson, stands tall. The fishing is tough as summer’s grip clings in early September, but the regulars on Jackson know some techniques that will tempt those lethargic late-summer bass. Like any big reservoir that gets lots of fishing pressure, Lake Jackson can be a difficult body of water to fish. This is especially true during the hot…
There are two keys to successful “dock shooting” — the crappie-fishing technique that involves using your fishing pole like a catapult to fire a crappie jig into shady crevices under docks. One key is shooting accuracy, the other is hook-setting skill. You can practice the first without even going to the lake — shooting jigs…
If a big bucketmouth in the boat is on your agenda this spring, let me get you started a few weeks early — and you’ll barely have to leave Atlanta to try and catch one. Located in portions of Butts, Jasper and Newton counties, Lake Jackson is a traditional big-fish lake in February. You don’t…
