Lake Jackson
Lake Jackson is one of the oldest reservoirs in the United States. Jackson has transitioned from a trophy largemouth bass lake to lots more spotted bass making up the bass catch. Crappie fishing is good on Jackson, and the lake is home to some huge catfish. The Lloyd Shoals Dam was built in 1910 by Central Georgia Power Company, and electricity was originally generated for the city of Macon. At 4,750 acres, Lake Jackson is small compared to other Georgia reservoirs.

Jackson: Level: 528. Temp: Low 60s. Clarity: Clear. Bass: Tournament angler Willie McMullen won a tournament at the end of October with 19.90 pounds and had big fish with a 5.90-lb. largemouth. Use extreme caution running the lake until it comes back up some. A lot of smaller bass are being caught on moving baits—bladed jigs to crankbaits. Shad and natural craw patterns are both good. Target wood and rock with them. For bigger fish, try green-pumpkin jigs on the ends of trees and deeper docks. Topwater is still a good option early and on shady banks after the sun gets up. A Whopper Plopper, Pop-R and a walking bait will work, but it changes daily. He says it’s finally a great time to catch fish again on Jackson. Mark Holloway of Madison had never fished Lake Jackson before Friday, three days before his Eliminator semi-final match. After his tournament day, he was wondering why — he loved the endless cover of blowdowns and overhanging branches that lines the rivers above Lake Jackson. And he loved the bass they produced. Blast-off was at 6:06…

May can be a magical month for Georgia bass fishermen. The weather has settled down into hot days, but the winds and storms of spring are mostly over. And the bass have settled down, too. They are bunching up on structure and feeding, and they are in predictable patterns. Lake Jackson is an excellent place…
