West Point Catfising Fishing Report – Sept. 27, 2024

Ronnie Garrison | September 27, 2024

West Point: Level: 9.8 feet below 635. Temp: 85-87 degrees. Clarity: Getting muddy.

Catfish: Ronnie Garrison spoke with catfish angler TR Clark, who said, “Catfishing on West Point Lake has been a season of ups and downs. On normal years, it is expected that there will be a hot bite just after the spawn, then another hot bite just after the fall transition where fish feed up just ahead of winter. Whether or not we experienced the postspawn bite is highly debatable.

“The Core of Engineers is dropping the lake for some maintenance on West Point Dam. Historical observation is that dropping water levels turns fish off. So the postspawn bite has been less than stellar. I have caught a precious few quality fish and know of a few others, but they are fewer and further between compared to previous years. However, the fall bite should be just around the corner.
“While I wish no harm on anyone, in terms of fishing, Hurricane Helene has the potential to set us back on a normal path, reduce water temperatures and create opportunities for a good bite. Whether it does, or doesn’t, remember to never discount the need for fresh, natural bait. I have fished several consecutive catfish tournaments on this lake and have been fortunate enough to be in the money every time. Fresh bait is THE key. You can catch small fish on gimmicky baits, but the big fish prefer natural forage. Every tournament has been won on bait caught from the lake the very day of the tournament, with definite preference for gizzard shad. I was able to score a first-place finish in a tournament with this exact strategy . Here’s hoping for a more productive fall!”
