Lake Weiss Fishing Report March 2011

GON Staff | February 23, 2011

Weiss: Level: 3.3 feet below full pool. Temp: Low High 40s. Clarity: Stained.

Bass: Fair. “Very few largemouths are being caught,” said guide Mark Collins. “A few fish are starting to show up on secondary points. Little River is still producing some good spotted bass fishing in the upper part on the old river ledges and the steep rock banks. A drop-shot rig with a 4-inch worm or a small craw is working great.”

Crappie:
Very good. “The crappie are starting to stage in the bays and coves on a prespawn pattern,” Mark said. “When the weather breaks and the water temperature climbs into the upper 40s, look for the crappie to really turn on for the spring. Longline trolling in 8 to 14 feet of water with 1/24-oz. Jiffy Jigs in colors JJ08, JJ13, JJ17, JJ20, JJ24, JJ25 will produce some great Weiss Lake slabs.”

Stripers: Poor. “A few stripers are being caught in the upper Coosa River trolling 1/4-oz. jigs with 3- and 4-inch white Sassy Shad trailers at 1.5 to 2 mph,” Mark said.

Catfish: Good. “They are being caught in the flats and coves in 10 to 20 feet of water on cut shad,” Mark said.
