Lake Weiss Fishing Report – January 2009

GON Staff | January 5, 2009

Weiss: Level: 3.6 feet below full pool. Temp: 51-53 degrees. Clarity: Stained up the Coosa.

Bass:
Fair to good, according to Warren Barnes. “The largemouths and spots are on the river ledges. I’m cranking the Jackall Muscle Deep10+, adjusting the bait color to the water color. I am working the bait very slowly around the deeper cover with a stop-and-go presentation. I am also casting a small finesse jig or worm such as the Jackall Flickshake, worked really slow to get those finicky fish. Try to bump stumps and debris to get the bite. I have caught some big spots using these techniques. On windy days a rattling bait such as Jackall TN-70 will also catch these fish. Cover lots of water with these baits, and you could load the boat, especially late in the day. If we get enough rain and the lake muddies up, try flipping a jig like the Revenge Flip Jig in black and red to the heavy cover and stumps around the lake, and you should see some Lake Weiss lunkers. These techniques should work throughout January, and one very productive area to try is around Riverside up to Mud Creek. As always, use caution, and watch for underwater obstructions.”
