Lake Weiss Fishing Report – April 2008

GON Staff | March 25, 2008

Weiss: Level: 1.4 feet below full pool. Temp: Mid 50s. Clarity: The main lake is clear, the backs of the creeks and the Coosa are stained.

Bass: Good, said Weiss fishing guide Mark Collins. “The bass are in the shallows back in the bays around secondary points and ditches. There have been good catches from around brush put out around docks by crappie fishermen. Try a Rat-L-Trap in chrome and blue. Yo-yo the bait back to the boat making it rise and fall. A pig ’n jig in crawfish colors has also been a good choice around docks and in brush, but most anglers are going with the more aggressive Rat-L-Trap or other crankbaits.”

Crappie: Good, according to crappie-tournament angler Kevin Randall. “We have been catching fish long-lining Big Bite Bait jigs or Hal Fly jigs over water 9 to 11 feet deep trolling 1.1 mph. The fish are still staged on the ledges at the mouths of the creeks knee-deep on your depthfinder. So far, the weather hasn’t allowed them to make their move to the bank.” He’s been fishing the main lake because the creeks are heavily stained. Black/blue chartreuse has been the hot color. Chartreuse tails work well.
