Lake Seminole Fishing Report – October 2020
GON Staff | September 23, 2020
Seminole: Level: 0.8 feet above full pool. Temp: 80 degrees. Clarity: Stained.
Bass: Guide Paul Tyre of Lake Seminole Fishing Adventures, reports, “The bass fishing has been very good through September. The topwater bite continues to catch some big bass on Lake Seminole. Buzzbaits and walking baits like a Heddon Zara Spook fished along the edges of the grasslines on the Flint River arm of the lake has been a very productive. As we move into October, the bass will be in their fall feed, feeding on shad. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits are very productive when the bass start chasing shad in the fall.” Guide Aaron Crews reports, “As I write this, another fisherman sadly lost his life on Lake Seminole. His body was recovered yesterday (Sept. 15). He did not come in Sunday. They found his boat Sunday night. Please wear your life jackets. There is a clothing line designed to help float you for up to four hours. IDI Gear and Stryker are two manufacturers. Oct. 1 is the first full moon, while Oct. 15 will be the new moon. Bass will begin schooling on shad. Fish spinnerbaits and crankbaits around schools of shad. Remember that bass eat their own fry this time of year, so topwater torpedoes and Rat-L-Traps in baby-bass patterns will work. Topwater and buzzbaits early and late will work.” Tournament angler Matt Baty reports, “The rising water and falling water temps are starting to heat up the fall bite. Small shad are abundant all over the lake. The topwater bite is good again, as is the flipping bite in Spring Creek. Grass points are key for both flipping and topwater. The lower end of Spring Creek around Ship Island is a good area. For topwater, use a Berkley Choppo 90 in bone on 50-lb. Berkley x9 braid. This technique works best with a super fast reel and a long rod. I use an Abu Garcia Revo Rocket with a 7-4 medium-heavy moderate Abu Garcia Veracity rod. The best grass points on the Flint are the ones out in front of Wingate’s. For flipping, use a 1.25-oz. tungsten, 5/0 Berkley Fusion 19 heavy-cover flipping hook and a Berkley Pit Boss in green pumpkin. A Revo Rocket and the new Veritas series rods from Abu Garcia make some awesome flipping setups. As the cooler fall temps continue, look for the fish to start moving more toward ditches and drains chasing bait. The bite will only get better on through the winter.”
Multiple Species: Guide Aaron Crews reports, “Crappie are in 5 to 15 feet of water on minnows. Panfish such as redbreast, bream, shellcracker and bluegill are in 5 to 12 feet of water on crickets and wigglers. Catfish are in 8 to 15 feet of water on minnows, cutbait and worms. There is a new technique for fishing shad bait balls for bass and other species, such as crappie. It utilizes a sabiki rig and a spoon instead of a weight. It can be cast or fished vertically. The grass is in good shape for fishing and duck hunting. Alligator season is going on, and the hunters are doing okay.”
