Lake Oconee Fishing Report July 2012

Oconee: Level: 0.2 feet below full pool. Temp: Mid 83 to 87 degrees. Clarity: Light stain.

Bass: Aaron Batson said early mornings he is searching for hatching mayflies and throwing a 1/4-oz. Ol Nellie buzzbait or Pop-R. There have been some good fish caught around these hatches. “Once the sun gets higher, look for main-lake docks in 8 to 12 feet of water, and throw a 1/4-oz. Net Boy Baits FootBall ScrewBall with a Wackem Crazy Baits Trick Stick in junebug and redbug colors. Look for any docks with brushpiles nearby for more fish.”

Crappie: Al Bassett reports, “Fish are holding in deeper water, over brushpiles, standing timber and deep drop-offs. Night fishing under the bridges and in the timber or around the lighted docks is good and will only get better. Use your Lowrance HDS and LSS-2 to find the fish on brushpiles or the deep drop-offs before you start fishing. Mark the area where you find fish holding with a marker, and either use live bait or cast to the area using Jiffy Jigs Super Grubs. When you find the fish, work the area very well, as the fish will be in large schools during this time of year. I have recently been finding a lot of fish stacking up under docks. When you find a dock holding fish, make sure you fish all areas of this dock, as you may have found a big school.
