Lake Burton Fishing Report – September 2023
GON Staff | August 30, 2023
Burton: Level: 0.3 feet below 1865. Temp: 82 degrees. Clarity: Clear.
Bass: Guide Wes Carlton reports, “The spotted bass have been deep the last few days with the warm temperatures we have had. We have been catching most of our fish near the main lake channel on long points in and around brush. A drop-shot technique has been the go-to the last few days. I’ve been using a Roboworm in the morning dawn or pearl colors. Be patient with these fish because they are slow to bite, but once you get one to bite, the others typically follow suit. There has been a little bit of a topwater bite mid-morning midway back in the creeks. These fish are chasing the herring schools around and pushing them up top. Try using a Rebel Pop-R in black. This bite should continue to get better as the water temp cools off this month. We have seen a little bit of water turning over the last week or so. Early fall is a great time to catch some big bass on Lake Burton!”
Brown Trout: Guide Wes Carlton reports, “The trout bite has been slow the last week or so. The fish we have caught have been fairly deep, 30 to 50 feet. Trolling Yo-Zuri Pins Minnows has worked best for us. Color hasn’t and doesn’t seem to matter. We have had better success trolling in the 3- to 4-mph range and setting baits around 28 feet deep. The brown trout bite should pick up significantly as we near October.”
Yellow Perch: Guide Wes Carlton reports, “The perch bite has been off the charts this year! We have caught yellow perch in every creek in Lake Burton. Most of the fish we have been targeting have been in the 18- to 22-foot depths. Locating the grass seems to be the ticket for catching multiple fish in a spot. We have been using crappie jigs to catch most of our fish. We have been catching a lot of chain pickerel while perch fishing. They really put up a fight on the light-weight 4-lb. rods we’re using. The perch bite will be consistent over the next few weeks as we enter into pre-fall. For more on fishing with Wes, go to www.georgialakefishing.com. Good luck!”
