Lake Blackshear Fishing Report May 2012

Blackshear: Level: 2.1 feet below full pool. Temp: 70 degrees. Clarity: Clear.

Bass: Fair. Tournament angler Brian Davis said Blackshear has not been fishing as well as it typically does in the spring. It took about 15 pounds for him to win a recent tournament, and he did it on postspawn fish. Brian said all the fish are off the beds. He caught his fish swimming a CBT swim jig in isolated grass between docks early. He likes a white-and-blue jig to match the shad, and he dresses it with a Zoom Swimmin’ Chunk. Once the sun gets up, move out and skip a jig-head worm under docks. Brian uses a CBT jig with a Zoom Trick Worm in green pumpkin.

Bream: Fair. Brian said even the bream beds aren’t as large or plentiful as they usually are around the full moons. He has found a few and has done pretty well with a pond worm or a cricket fished behind a small split-shot.

Crappie: Slow. Rusty Parker said crappie are stacked up on deep-water channel ledges in 18 feet of water around brush. You can catch a few, but you’ll have to push tightlined minnows or jigs very slowly. At dark, there are also some fish coming to dock lights. Rusty said to slingshot a Rag Fly jig to them. The best colors have been one called a funky jig, which is chartreuse/watermelon green/chartreuse and black and a chartreuse/pearl/chartreuse.
