Lake Allatoona Fishing Report – March 2025

GON Staff | February 26, 2025

Allatoona: Level: 4.2 feet below 840. Temp: 49. Clarity: Stained.

Bass: Tournament angler Matt Driver reports, “The bass bite in March at Allatoona is typically on fire. The crankbait bite is hard to beat. The bass are on the move headed toward spawning areas. They are feeding up along the way. The shallow, stained water warms up quick. Fish fast, but be efficient. There were several giant bass caught last month, and March is one best months for big fish. The Spro RkCRAWLER, Aruku Shad and a white spinnerbait fished on flats near spawning area will be working.”

Linesides: Guide Robert Eidson, of First Bite Guide Service, reports, “Lineside fishing is poor. All the rain we had in February raised the lake 15 feet in a week. It’s rolling mud from the north end of the lake to the south end right now (Feb. 19). There is debris everywhere. Before the rains, mid-lake was our better bite. Flatlines and planer boards were working best. Hopefully, the lake will clear up soon, and we can get back to catching. But right now, it’s just tough fishing on Allatoona for linesides. In March, the fish will start their spawning runs. Normally we see this start in early March, but with the floods, I expect a later spawning run this year. Look for these fish to start staging in the upper bays near Little River and Fields Landing. Once the spawn starts, look for the fish to start migrating up both the Etowah and Little rivers. The white bass will run first, followed by the hybrids and then the stripers. Big baits fished on freelines will give you a chance to catch a monster, but smaller baits and cutbait fished on the bottom will produce numbers.”

Crappie: Robert DeHaas, of Red Rooster Custom Baits and an OG from “Team Geezer,” reports, “Fellow crappie anglers, we hope that this March 2025 Lake Allatoona crappie report finds you doing well and ready to hit the water to catch some slabs. We have had an up and down February, and by up and down I mean the normal winter weather we get on Lake Allatoona. By the middle of February, the rains came in and raised the lake up past full pool, and as you can imagine with that much rain, the lake was muddy and covered with debris. Not to mention we had a cold front or two. Enough of the history lesson, let’s get into March. March should be a great month to be on Lake Allatoona. The day and night temps should stabilize and bring the water temperature up to right around 60 degrees by the end of the month. Once that water temperature gets in the 50s, it’s time to start looking shallow between 2 and 8 feet. The crappie should start roaming from the mouth of the creeks to the backs of the creeks, as well as shallow flats off of the main river channel. When that happens, you will need to be trolling a combination of 1/32-, 1/24- and a 1/16-oz. jig head between 0.7 mph to 1 mph. If the water is stained to heavy stained, the crappie could be right up close to the surface, which is where the 1/32-oz. jig head comes into play. If you do find the crappie are holding shallow on the bank or in a cut, don’t overlook throwing a cork and a 1/32-oz. jig head. Set your jig 8 to 12 inches below the cork, slowly work it back to the boat or let the wind drift that cork down the bank and hang on. If you don’t find anything, keep moving until you start catching and work the area. Make sure to use light line between 4- and 6-lb. test. During March, we like to troll the Kic’n Chic’n and Kic’n Chic’n XL paddletail swimbaits in bluegrass, lemonade, sour grape and blue glimmer if the water is stained. If there is heavy stain, we like to use something with orange in it, such as albright special or cajun chicken. March should be a lot of fun as the water temps rise and gets those Lake Allatoona crappie fired up and ready to spawn. It is a great time to get the kids out for a day on the boat and make some memories. We hope this March report helps you catch more fish, and remember don’t take more crappie than you need so we can keep our great lake stocked for generations to come. We are truly blessed to have a great fishery. Jeremiah 29:11 says: ‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.’ We believe in an awesome Lord and Savior who loves us and wants nothing more than to give us hope in all circumstances and a wonderful future in this life and most certainly the life to come with Him. May God bless everyone reading this report and Lord willing, we will have another great report for April 2025.”
