Georgia Saltwater Fishing Report – October 2008

GON Staff | September 23, 2008

Saltwater: Inshore & Nearshore: Still very good for a variety of species, said Capt. David Newlin, who fishes out of Richmond Hill. “Tarpon are still here in abundance. Anywhere you can find a big school of pogies near the beaches, you can find tarpon. Live pogy is your best bet. Big blacktip sharks are thick in the channels off St. Catherines and Sapelo Sounds, especially around the shrimp boats. Redfish and trout are hitting real good. Redfish are everywhere. Smaller ones in the river are eating live shrimp near any oyster beds. The big fish are on the beach fronts. Try a fillet of fresh mullet on the bottom just outside of the breakers, anywhere from 2 to 20 feet deep. Trout are starting to head up the rivers. I have found good numbers of fish several miles from the ocean this week. Most of my fish have been on live shrimp. I’ve caught some on a green DOA shrimp. Artificals will work better toward the middle of October. Water temp on the 18th was 86. Usually when it hits the high 70s, the fishing gets wide open. I’ve also caught several big tripletail on shrimp this week.”
