Georgia Saltwater Fishing Report – May 2010

GON Staff | April 27, 2010

Saltwater: Inshore: Capt. Bob Barnette reports, “April has been a good month for the whiting bite on the coast. May should be even better with the water temp rising every day and bait starting to show up. Redfish have been eating all winter and show no signs of stopping. On the other hand, spotted seatrout have been hard to catch, but over the last couple of weeks they seem to be showing up in small numbers. This should improve all month with the arrival of larger roe trout. Look to the shallow oyster bars and mud flats for the reds and creek mouths for trout. The whiting are in the sounds and along the beach front. Fish on the bottom with dead shrimp and cut squid for these tasty fish. May also ushers in the arrival of the first cobia and maybe a few tarpon. Both of these bruisers will bend a rod for you if you are lucky enough to hook up. Look for these in the sounds and around the buoys marking the inlets and channels. Either of these will take small live fish as a meal. I like to use pogies for bait, with a good chum slick behind the boat.”
