Blackshear Crappie Fishing Report – Sept. 13, 2024

Maurice Van Hall | September 13, 2024

Maurice Van Hall said the fall crappie bite has started on Lake Blackshear.

Blackshear: Level: Full at 237. Temp: 79 degrees. Clarity: Stained.

I visited Lake Blackshear yesterday, Thursday, Sept. 12, finding light rain, wind and no other boats on the lake. The water temperature was down to 79 degrees, and the fish were chomping. The fall bite has begun!
I was really pleased to run into white crappie, which had been scarce all year. I caught a few mixed with the blacks, and most were in small schools 18 to 22 feet deep.  The whites hit some bigger jigs, all in monkey milk and pink heads. The black crappie definitely wanted you to downsize, and color did not seem to matter much.
I caught around 60 by my noon departure. There are schools of small crappie roaming around. If you begin catching them, I would advise moving because the bigger fish are swimming together. Some of the black crappie were close to the surface.
