Altamaha River Fishing Report – March 2022

GON Staff | February 24, 2022

Altamaha River: Dan Stone reports, “The Altamaha River at Charlottesville is currently at 8.3 and falling. Flood stage is 13, and ideal stage is 1 to 4 feet. The current temp is 58 degrees, and the ideal temp is 70 plus. The wet winter months in January and February resulted in four to eight weeks of the river being over full pool and out of the banks. However, fishermen for years indicate the importance of high levels to support growth and population of largemouth bass, redbreast, crappie and channel catfish. The March 2022 outlook appears to be on schedule and will be one of the best in years. Fishermen over the past few weeks have started setting limb hooks with live bait (bream) from ponds and are catching 40-plus-lb. flatheads in boils along the river. Mouths of the sloughs along the river will be hot areas for crappie as fishermen take advantage of the eddy water with fish seeking cover. Hand poles with 10-lb. test with light/medium lead with adjustable corks and minnows will produce nice hand-sized fish. As willows green up and the river falls, crappie can be caught under the willow cover. Minnows and light jigs are popular. Channel catfish are abundant being caught with worms, cut bait and just about anything stinky you can keep on the hook in the Altamaha currents. One- to 12-lb. sizes are being reported. Bass fishing has been slow but will pick up as river stages fall and water temps increase. Fish small- to medium-diving crankbaits, spinnerbaits and rubber plastics. The Altamaha at Charlottesville and points up and down have experienced an abundance of stage fluctuations. Fishermen need to pay close attention to channel changes and dislodged timber when boating.”
