How GON Gets Its Stories

Dear GON,

Thank you for publishing my story in your December issue about the coyote I shot with the heartworms. When I sent the information in along with the picture, I had no idea you would make a full-page article about it and show the picture on the cover. My nephew thought that I should submit it, and it surprised both of us. The article was interesting and informative.

Thanks for all your efforts to provide Georgia hunters and fishermen (and women) with interesting, informative, educational and entertaining Georgia outdoor news!

Bob Chestnutt, Ludowici

Editor’s Note: Bob, we appreciate you sending it in. If we didn’t have readers and supporters of GON magazine sharing information with our readers, it’s highly likely there wouldn’t be a GON magazine today.

DNR Hunt Regs Meetings Coming In January

Dear GON,

I am writing to you in reference to a serious decline in the population of the fox squirrels in north Georgia.

While they were once reasonably common in Regions 1 and 2 (north Georgia), they are now seldom seen.

The current bag limit of 12 squirrels per day does not differentiate between gray squirrels and fox squirrels. I believe this should be rectified at once. I would like to see fox squirrels totally protected in Regions 1 and 2 until such time as they can regenerate to reasonable numbers.

Additionally,  the current regulations on WMAs of one fox squirrel per hunter per day, while a small step in the right direction, should be changed to eliminate hunting fox squirrels on WMAs entirely until further notice. Once again, until they return to a viable population.

Anyone who would like to weigh in on this matter can email the Board of Natural Resources prior to their Jan. 31, 2025 meeting at:  [email protected].

Hopefully, public input will be favorably received and acted upon accordingly.

Sincerely,

Al Jett, Adairsville

Editor’s Note: Al, the timing to voice your thoughts is perfect. If GON readers would like to attend an upcoming meeting and comment on future hunting regulations, those meetings are listed at georgiawildlife.com/regulations/meetings. WRD public meetings are Jan. 13-16, 2025.

Richard Bynum said it took him three years to finally connect on this Colquitt County buck.

Chad McArdle with a Jackson County buck from Dec. 12.

Cameron Moroney with a Macon County buck killed with his .270 on Nov. 16.

Sebastian Barrett was 18 months old when his parents, Hamilton and Susie Barrett, of Marietta, used GON as a potty-training tool. Sebastian loves GON and his parents would only let him look at it when he was on the potty. Guess what? It worked! He got his lifetime hunting and fishing license at age 2 and is now an avid fisherman at 9 years old. He went deer hunting for the first time this season.
