Days GON By September 2015
Brad Gill | September 3, 2015
Each month we turn back the clock to see what was being reported in the pages of GON, both 20 and 10 years ago. Here’s a look back at what appeared in GON.
20 Years Ago: September 1995
A 1965 Report On Hunting Expenses: How much will you spend on your hunting related needs this season? For many of us, it will be in the thousands. Twenty years ago, GON looked at a 1965 study done by the Game and Fish Commission, and the findings were interesting. The 1965 survey was designed to find out about hunting expenditures and the economic impact of Georgia’s hunters. Here’s what they found.

In 1995, GON revisited Georgia’s hunting history by looking at a 1965 study done by the Game and Fish Commission. The 50-year-old map above shows the 1965 deer season dates. Counties in white didn’t even have a deer season, and a large chunk of Georgia had less than a month of deer hunting days.
Average Annual Expenses of Hunters in Georgia (1965):
Auxiliary Equipment: $5.30
Hunting Equipment: $11.22
Food and Lodging: $4.70
Transportation: $6.01
Licenses, Tags, Permits $3.24
Guides, etc. $1.30
Dogs $1.56
Annual Lease $0.81
Hunting Preserve Fees $0.34
Total $34.48
Most hunters today spend more than the 1965 average annual total when purchasing just their hunting licenses. It was also mentioned in the GON article that gasoline in 1968 was $0.34 a gallon.

This cougar, known as T-40, was tranquilized near Thomson in 1995. The Florida panther was one of 10 cats released just west of Jacksonville, Fla. The study was conducted to see if big cats could establish a population in north Florida. Using a radio collar to gather data, T-40 traveled 400 miles through Georgia and was never reported as being seen by anyone.

Brooke Tomlin, 13 at the time, won the Truck-Buck Shoot-Out 10 years ago. She is still the only female to ever win the grand prize at the Shoot-Out.

The GON sticker has shown up in some interesting and unique places over the last 10 years, but this picture is without a doubt one of our all-time favorites. Denny Swain, of Snellville, sent it, and he said, “Here is a picture of my wife’s nephew S/Sgt. Alan Trawick, who is stationed in Iraq. He is with the Stryker Unit out of Fort Lewis, Washington. He is the one with the sunglasses, and the gunner is Sgt. English.”
