Artificial Intelligence Can’t Compete
On The Shoulders Of Giants With Andrew Curtis

The thought of artificial intelligence scares me. First of all, I just don’t understand it. I never will. I never want to.
As more and more people are leaning on technology and becoming completely and hopelessly dependent on it, I find myself yearning to take a step back away from it all. I find comfort in the outdoors and always have. AI certainly can’t find me there if I don’t want it to… and I don’t want it to!
I recognize the fact that business in this country relies on technology advancements. Our country couldn’t run without it. As much as I dislike even just text messaging some days, I am guilty of using it, perhaps excessively. Texting is one of the most passively invasive distractions in our lives. It pulls us away time and time again from our daily tasks. And yet, I can’t live without it. I view it as a necessary evil in our society, but I still try to push back. Again, the outdoors gives me an escape.
Text messaging is one thing, but artificial intelligence?
The use of AI is growing rapidly. Too rapidly. (Up goes my blood pressure.) And though there is a lot that AI can do (and should not do), there is so much that it cannot do, and never will be able to do. Does it have honesty? Does it have honor? Does it have integrity? It definitely doesn’t have emotions.
If you are reading this now, you most likely enjoy the outdoors. What can AI do to enhance your outdoor experience? I guess it can ASSIST in your outdoor quests, but it cannot LIVE them for you. No doubt some of the gadgets can help put you on more fish or deer or turkeys or whatever game you are after, but the thrill lies in the REAL experiences combining with our REAL human emotions, those things that we cannot create. Those are given to us by God alone. AI can’t do that.
I always write about the “giants” in my life. “I’m tall because I stand on the shoulders of giants.” That’s a phrase I reflect on every day. As you can imagine, none of my giants are robots. My giants are real, living, breathing humans who are driven by the Holy Spirit of God at their core. Those are who I want to follow… the ones who make me a better man. The ones who encourage me to grow my faith in Christ.
I say it all the time… GON is full of these giants (not robots).
Many days now, I find myself just wanting something real instead of this computerized world we are trapped in. Well, GON is real. It’s a real organization of real members with real experiences. GON is made up of an outstanding group of people with honesty, honor, integrity and certainly emotions. (Down goes my blood pressure.) Hey, Artificial Intelligence, can you compete with that?
Suddenly AI doesn’t scare me so badly.

Andrew graduated from UGA in 2006 with his undergraduate degree in Animal Health and from UGA’s veterinary school in 2010. His passion for fishing and the outdoors began when he was a young boy spending time with his grandfather at Lake Oconee. Now he enjoys passing on what he has learned to his two young boys at their home on the Alapaha River. Turkey hunting and south Georgia river fishing are among his favorite pastimes, but his main interests involve mentoring kids in the outdoors while spreading the Word of Jesus. Andrew has discovered the joy and power in writing and hopes to benefit others through his words.
