Kind Words From Truck-Buck Shoot-Out Contestants 

Dear GON,

My family and I would like to thank GON for doing a great job with the Outdoor Blast in Macon. The camaraderie with the competitors in the Truck-Buck Shoot-Out was a good experience. We were all cheering for each other.

One thing you did that really added class to the event was the presence of the young men from the military academy. They brought a level of politeness and professionalism that is refreshing this day and time. I spent time talking to several of them and was very impressed.

There was also a great display of new and well-known products without all the junk.

Thanks again for a great time.

Please Tell Me “Cougar Quest” Was Just For Fun 

Dear GON,

I just received my first GON in August. After seeing your panther photos, I could not believe that you work for an outdoor magazine. Your No. 1 picture is a bobcat. Your No. 2 picture is of a dog. Your No. 3 picture is a close up of a house cat. Anybody who thinks these are pictures of panthers should stay out of the woods.

I hope these were just for fun.

Editor’s Note: With all the calls over the past 20 years about hunters reportedly seeing cougars, GON hosted a 1-year “Cougar Quest,” where readers could submit evidence of living cougars in Georgia. GON wouldn’t judge or vote on any of the submissions. We’d simply share it with our readers and let them decide what they considered the best evidence. After hundreds of submissions, there was not one smoking-gun photo that proved the existence of  cougars in Georgia. So, was it just for fun? You could say we had a really good time with this one, so much so that we’ve continued the contest for another year.

No Luck Needed With 100 Pounds of Yellow Gold 

Dear GON,

I would like to say I’ve been reading GON for as long as I can remember, and it’s really going to turn my stomach to read about the first Truck-Buck entry that says the deer came up to bait. I’m not a big fan of the new law, even though I know baiting has been going on illegally, just not to the mass amount that it’s going to be happening now.

I don’t want to sound like a hater to hunters who don’t know how to manage their properties and will be stealing deer from the joining properties, so good luck! Oh wait, you don’t need luck. Y’all have 100 pounds of yellow gold out.

I do want to wish everyone a safe hunting season. There is no reason to get hurt doing something we love to do no matter what you’re hunting over, so make sure you save some money after buying the corn for the right safety equipment.

Dear GON,

Thanks very much for your editorial in the May 2011 issue of GON regarding the deer-feeding bill.

The Georgia Hunting and Fishing Federation (GHFF) worked very hard on the passage of this bill, with Reggie Dickey and Ronnie Gaskins of the GHFF leading the charge.

I feel blessed to be associated with the GHFF and GON.
