Lake Weiss Fishing Report – March 2020

GON Staff | February 27, 2020

Weiss: Level: 0.2 feet above full pool. Temp: 51-53 degrees. Clarity: Stained to muddy.

Bass: Guide and tournament pro Mike Carter reports, “Weiss is flooded due to the recent heavy rains, and with this the fishing has been extremely tough. It’s not only the flood but the muddy conditions paired with it has made finding some feeding fish very difficult. The main patterns for finding fish during these conditions is covering as much flooded woods, backyards and pastures as possible. A few lures I like to use during these times are Choo Choo spinnerbaits and Shakers. Putting these lures around close to the flooded trees and brush is important to pursue the reaction bite you’re looking for. Another good pattern for some consistent numbers is using Echo and MR6 crankbaits around eddies on the down-current sides of points and shallow bars. The most important thing during flooded conditions is to make sure and cover as much water as possible to look for those quality fish this lake can produce this time of year.” Guide Mark Collins reports, “Bass fishing is fair. A lot of bass are being caught on culverts and anywhere there is fresh water running into the lake.”

Crappie: Fair. Guide Mark Collins reports, “Some crappie are still being caught longline trolling in Bay Springs and Little River, despite the high, muddy water. Look for thing to improve as the water recedes and clears up.”
