Lake Jackson Fishing Report – January 2020

GON Staff | December 31, 2019

Jackson: Level: Full pool. Temp: Upper 40s to low 50s. Clarity: Clear to slightly stained.

Bass: Tournament angler Brian Lee reports, “Bass fishing is extremely tough right now. It’s fishing like a totally different lake than what we’re use to. Look for big spotted bass down lake, this has been the best consistent bite. Long points and channel swings should have schools of fish on them that you can get to eat. Look for suspended fish over timber in 15 to 20 feet, and a 3/8-oz. Fish Head Spin is the best bait for these bass. Count your bait down to a depth above the bass, and then start your retrieve, keeping the bait in the strike zone. If the water is extremely clear, don’t expect a shallow cranking bite to happen. The cold weather conditions will kill it. Look for a shallow bite around floating docks in the 3- to 8-foot range. I like to flip a Dirty Jig in a color according to the water clarity. Look for a jigging spoon bite to pick up a few bass this month. A Lucky Craft Pointer 78 will catch bass if you can get the cadence exactly the way the fish want the bait that day. Look for February to be a little better than this month, as the shallow fish should bite better. The key factor is the weather. Colder temps will make it tougher. A day or so of warmer temps will make them eat.”
